ASUS ROG is the dominant gaming laptop brand in Australian universities, LAN cafes, and esports setups. The ROG Zephyrus, Strix SCAR, and TUF Gaming lines are everywhere in Melbourne — and they come into our Roxburgh Park workshop constantly. The most common complaint is thermal throttling: the laptop was quick when it was new, and now it's sluggish under load, fans are screaming, and games that once ran at 120fps are dropping to 60. That's almost always dried thermal paste, and it's a $89 fix.
Zenbook is ASUS's premium ultrabook line — the answer to the MacBook Air for Windows users who want a slim, high-resolution machine. Screen damage is the most common Zenbook fault we see, followed by battery degradation after a few years of daily charging. We repair both, and we carry common Zenbook panels in stock. Our Roxburgh Park workshop handles everything from a simple screen swap on a VivoBook to board-level GPU solder joint repair on a high-end ROG Strix.
ROG and TUF Gaming laptops require thermal paste and heat pipe cleaning every 2–3 years — more frequently if the machine is used heavily for gaming. The paste between the CPU, GPU, and heat pipes is a consumable: it dries out, cracks, and loses its thermal conductivity. When that happens, temperatures spike under load and the processor throttles to protect itself, cutting performance by 30–50%. Our thermal service includes applying high-grade compound (we use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on gaming laptops), cleaning the fans, and clearing the heat pipe fins. Most customers see a 10–20°C reduction and a full recovery of gaming performance.
ROG laptops increasingly use high-refresh, high-resolution displays — 144Hz FHD panels on mid-range models, and QHD or 4K 165Hz+ panels on the Zephyrus and Strix SCAR range. Screen replacement on these laptops requires care: the display is secured differently to standard laptops, and the high-refresh cable routing can be fiddly. Some ROG models also have a MUX switch for direct GPU output — we ensure this is preserved and functional after a screen replacement. We stock common ROG display panels and can source less common ones within 1–2 days.
ROG batteries are often high-capacity (90Wh+ on gaming models) but are located under glued panels in newer chassis — the ROG Zephyrus G14 and G15, for example, require careful case disassembly. Battery degradation is common at the 3-year mark, with some ROG models showing 60–70% capacity by then due to heavy discharge cycles during gaming sessions. We use OEM-specification replacement cells. If your ROG laptop now barely lasts an hour unplugged when it used to last three, the battery is almost certainly the culprit.
Older ROG models — particularly the GL503VD, GL504, and early G series — have a known vulnerability around GPU solder joints and power management faults. The GPU itself is usually fine; the issue is the solder connection between the chip and the board, which fatigues from heat cycles over years of gaming. Our board-level micro-soldering capability lets us attempt these repairs where most shops would tell you the laptop is dead. No-fix, no-fee applies to all board-level work.

STS at Roxburgh Park is the go-to ASUS repair shop for Melbourne's north — Craigieburn, Broadmeadows, Coburg, Bundoora, Greenvale, and the university campuses at La Trobe and RMIT Bundoora. Gaming laptop overheating and screen damage are the faults we see most often. We are honest about what's fixable and what isn't, and we price our repairs fairly. If your ROG is overheating, the fix is usually $89 of thermal paste and a fan clean — not a new laptop.
