HP is one of the most popular laptop brands in Australian homes and businesses — from the entry-level Pavilion that's in half the households in Roxburgh Park, to the premium Spectre x360 that competes with Apple's MacBook, to the EliteBook that sits on desks in Melbourne's corporate offices. HP makes a lot of laptops, and a lot of HP laptops come to us for repair.

Two faults stand out with HP more than other brands: hinge failure and battery swelling. The Spectre x360 hinge mechanism is beautifully engineered — until it wears out, at which point the display becomes loose or stiff, and continued use starts stressing the display cable and back panel. Pavilion hinges have a different problem: they're less robust and snap cleanly with a hard drop or a backpack crush. HP batteries also swell more often than average — a swollen battery pressing against your keyboard is a safety issue, not just an inconvenience, and it needs to be replaced promptly.

HP hinge failure is the most distinctively common HP fault we see at STS. The Spectre x360 uses a 360-degree hinge mechanism that allows the screen to fold all the way back into tablet mode — this hinge takes far more articulation cycles than a standard laptop hinge, and it wears out. A worn Spectre hinge develops play, wobbles when you're typing, and eventually the torque mechanism fails completely. The Pavilion line has a more straightforward hinge that tends to snap at the barrel when the machine is dropped or compressed in a bag. In both cases, a broken hinge isn't just annoying — it bends the display cable routing and can crack the display back panel if left unfixed. We replace the hinge hardware and assess any associated damage from $99.

HP's screen range is broad. At the top end, the Spectre x360 and Envy OLED variants use high-quality OLED panels — vivid, thin, and expensive to replace ($229+). The mid-range Envy line uses solid IPS FHD displays. The Pavilion and HP Laptop 15 series use standard FHD panels that we carry in stock and can replace quickly from $139. One thing to watch on HP convertibles: the screen cable runs through the hinge mechanism, so if your Spectre has a hinge fault and a display fault, they may well be related — we check both at the same diagnostic.

HP battery swelling is a real and recurring problem. We see it more with HP than with Dell or Lenovo. A lithium-ion battery swells when cells degrade and produce gas — the pouch expands, pressing against whatever is above it (usually the keyboard). If your HP Pavilion or Spectre keyboard feels raised in the middle, or the palm rest flexes when you press it, the battery is almost certainly the cause. This is a safety issue: a swollen battery can rupture or, in extreme cases, cause a fire. Battery replacement from $89 — bring it in today if you're seeing these signs, don't leave it in a bag.

HP EliteBook and ProBook laptops serve Melbourne's corporate market — accounting firms, legal offices, healthcare practices. EliteBook is a genuinely well-built machine: MIL-SPEC durability, spill-resistant keyboards, and good repairability. We handle EliteBook repairs for corporate customers, issue proper tax invoices, and treat data with the same respect as if it were our own. If your business has a small fleet of HP ProBooks or EliteBooks, we can handle batch repairs with a single invoice.
