The iPhone X generation — X (2017), XR (2018), XS and XS Max (2018) — introduced Face ID to iPhone and eliminated the home button. The XR was the best-selling iPhone of 2019, Apple's most popular iPhone of the era, and millions remain in daily use in Australia. Now 6–7 years old, these phones are firmly in battery replacement territory, and many screens have accumulated wear or damage that warrants repair.

The iPhone XR occupies a unique position in the repair market: it uses an LCD panel (Apple called it "Liquid Retina" but it's IPS LCD), which makes screen replacement significantly cheaper than the OLED X, XS, and XS Max. If you have a cracked XR, the $79 screen repair is some of the best value in iPhone repairs. The XR received iOS 17 — it still runs a modern operating system and remains a capable daily device.

iPhone XR screen repair uses the 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD panel — Apple's IPS LCD with high pixel density and True Tone colour calibration. The XR display is wide and usable; the trade-off versus OLED (no true blacks, slightly thicker panel) doesn't affect the repair process. Screen replacement from $79. True Tone calibration is maintained with a correctly-spec'd replacement panel.

iPhone X and XS screen repairs use the 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED — the same technology Apple used through the iPhone 12. OLED panels are more expensive than LCD, which is why X/XS screen replacement starts from $99 rather than $79. The XS Max (6.5-inch OLED) uses the largest OLED panel of the X generation — screen replacement from $119. Both display the full P3 wide colour gamut and feature True Tone.

Battery replacement is the dominant service for X-generation iPhones. The XR's 2,942mAh battery, X's 2,716mAh, and XS Max's 3,174mAh cells have been through 1,500–2,000+ charge cycles in heavy use. At current typical health levels (70–80%), these batteries are throttling CPU performance and failing to last a working day. A $49 battery replacement restores the original battery life and, importantly, removes iOS's performance throttling — you'll notice the phone feel faster as well as lasting longer.

Lightning port repair covers all X-generation iPhones. None of these models uses USB-C — they all charge via Lightning. The Lightning port is on a flex board; in most cases it replaces without board-level micro-soldering.

Face ID on X-generation iPhones is located in the notch — the TrueDepth camera system contains an infrared camera, dot projector, and flood illuminator that map your face in 3D. Unlike Touch ID, Face ID cannot be repaired at an independent repair shop in the same way — if the Face ID sensor is physically damaged (not just a software issue), it requires Apple-proprietary calibration.
