Valve's Steam Deck changed portable gaming — a full PC gaming library in your hands, with the power to run most titles at playable settings. The Steam Deck OLED took it further with a stunning 90Hz OLED panel and extended battery life. For Melbourne PC gamers who travel or prefer couch gaming, the Steam Deck has become a favourite device.
At STS Roxburgh Park, we repair both Steam Deck models: the original LCD (64GB, 256GB, 512GB) and the Steam Deck OLED (512GB, 1TB). The most common faults we see are joystick drift — extremely common after heavy use — and screen damage. Valve designed the Deck to be user-repairable with iFixit's guidance, which means our technicians can work on it with the right tools and parts. Free diagnostic, 6-month warranty on all repairs.
Joystick drift is far and away the most common Steam Deck fault. The Hall-effect sensor design used in the thumbsticks is an improvement over older potentiometer designs, but the Deck's stick assemblies still develop drift after significant use — particularly on left stick for directional movement. We replace the thumbstick modules with quality replacement units. The repair involves careful disassembly of the shell and controller board — it's a well-documented repair that our technicians perform regularly.
Screen damage on the Steam Deck is a real risk for a device designed to be taken anywhere. The original Steam Deck LCD uses a 7-inch 800p IPS panel — a good display that's repairable at reasonable cost. The Steam Deck OLED uses a 7.4-inch 800p OLED panel — a significant upgrade in visual quality and worth protecting. Both are held in place with screws rather than adhesive, making screen replacement more straightforward than many phones. OLED parts take slightly longer to source.
Battery replacement restores the full runtime on a Deck that's down to 1–2 hours of gaming. The 40Wh battery in both models is accessible from the rear of the device with standard tools — it's one of the more DIY-friendly aspects of the Deck's design, but professional replacement ensures correct thermal management and connector seating.
The USB-C port handles charging (45W via USB-C PD) and the Steam Deck Dock connection. A damaged or failed USB-C port means no charging and no docking — it's one of the more critical faults. We repair at the board level via micro-soldering, which is more reliable than just swapping the connector housing.
