Xbox controller stick drift is the controller equivalent of Joy-Con drift — and it's just as pervasive. The standard Xbox wireless controller (used with Xbox Series X, Series S, and Xbox One) uses potentiometer-based analogue sticks that wear with use. The internal carbon wiper degrades, causing the stick to send off-centre signals when you're not touching it. In games, this appears as camera drift, character movement, or aim creep.

The Xbox One generation had a second major fault: the LB/RB bumper design. The bumper mechanism on early Xbox One controllers was prone to the mounting tab cracking, leaving the bumper floppy and unreliable. This was such a widespread issue that Microsoft revised the design in later hardware — but millions of affected controllers are still in use.

At STS Roxburgh Park we repair both standard Xbox controllers and the premium Xbox Elite Series 2, which uses different internals (hall effect sticks, customisable paddles) and requires a different repair approach.

Stick drift repair is our most common Xbox controller service. For standard Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One controllers, we replace the analogue stick module — the small Alps-style potentiometer assembly that wears and causes drift. Replacement with a quality stick module restores precise analogue input. From $49 per stick, $79 for both. The repair takes about 30–60 minutes.

Xbox Elite Series 2 drift is different in that the Elite uses hall effect (magnetic) analogue sticks, which are more resistant to the potentiometer-style drift that affects standard controllers. However, the Elite does develop its own faults: the rubberised grip can peel, the bumpers and trigger locks crack, and the rechargeable battery pack can fail. If your Elite Series 2 is showing stick issues, it's more often a calibration or firmware issue than physical wear — we can diagnose this for free and advise whether hardware intervention is needed. Elite stick module replacement from $69 if hardware replacement is required.

Bumper repair on Xbox One controllers targets the LB/RB mechanism. The Xbox One bumper is a plastic lever assembly — when the mounting tab cracks (usually from repeated button presses or a drop), the bumper stops clicking properly. It may feel spongy, click intermittently, or not register at all. Replacement is straightforward: the bumper assembly is swapped for a revised part. From $39 (single bumper).

Trigger repair covers the LT/RT paddles, which can develop sticky or inconsistent feel from contamination inside the trigger mechanism, or crack if the controller is dropped. Trigger cleaning or replacement from $39.

Button replacement covers ABXY, the D-pad, and the menu/view buttons. Buttons that stick or don't click are usually caused by contaminant ingress under the silicone pad — a clean or replacement resolves this. Button replacement from $29.

USB-C port repair on Xbox Series X/S controllers addresses a worn or damaged USB-C port. Series X/S controllers charge via USB-C (unlike Xbox One controllers which used micro-USB). A damaged port causes intermittent charging or failure to charge. Port replacement from $49.

Our workshop is at Shop G69, 250 Somerton Road, Roxburgh Park. Open 7 days, 9am–5pm.
